Output:

  1. Definitions
    • ϕw = Resistance factor for welds
    • Fu = Ultimate strength of base metal (ksi)
    • Xu = Ultimate strength of electrode (ksi)
    • Dw = Fillet weld leg size (in)
    • Lw = Weld length (in)
    • θ1 = Angle between longitudinal axis of weld and line of action of applied force (deg)
    • θ2 = Orientation of weld closest to 90deg, in a multi-orientation weld (deg)
    • Mw = Strength reduction factor for multi-orientation welds
    • Aw = Area of effective weld throat (in2)
    • Am = Area of effective fusion face (in2)
  2. Shear capacity of base metal
    • Vr,base = 0.67 ϕw Am Fu
    • where Am = Dw Lw = 1.5
    • Vr,base = 0.67 (0.67) (0.25*6) (65)
    • Vr,base = 43.77 kip
  3. Shear capacity of weld metal
    • Vr,weld = 0.67 ϕw Aw Xu (1.00+0.5sin(θ1)^1.5) Mw
    • where Mw = (0.85 + θ1/600)/(0.85+θ2/600) = 1
    • where Aw = Lw Dw / √2 = 1.061
    • Vr,weld = 0.67 (0.67) (0.25*6 / 1.414) (71) (1.5) (1)
    • Vr,weld = 50.72 kip
  4. Result
    • Vr = min(Vr,base, Vr,weld)
    • Vr = min(43.77, 50.72)
    • Vr = 43.77 kip
